Duties and Responsibilities:
A periodontist specializes in the prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the supporting structures of
the teeth such as the gum, jaws and connective tissues. Periodontists often
carry out cosmetic procedures to enhance the smile of clients. These procedures
are often surgical procedures to reduce the amount of tissue surrounding the
teeth. They may also replace badly shaped teeth with artificial ones.
They carry out tasks such as scaling, root
planning removal of damaged tissue from the root surface. They also carry out
dental placement procedures. Periodontists do more complex procedures than
general dentists.
Salary: $97,000-$241,000
Education:
To become a periodontist, students should take
high school courses in biology, chemistry, health, physics, and mathematics. It
is required to go to college for 2 years and take pre-dental education to receive
your bachelor’s degree before you admit to a dental school. Graduate dental
school, which consist of 4 years. You must complete a graduate program in
periodontics, get licensed to practice, and get board certified as a
periodontist.
