Duties and Responsibilities:
Sports medicine doctors
are primary physicians who treat injuries to the body’s joints, muscles or
bones. Sports medicine doctors examine and treat sport or athletic injuries. They
also prescribe medications to patients. They consult patients to determine the
appropriate course of treatment. They are also trained to address issues
associated with nutrition, sports psychology and substance abuse. Sports medicine
doctors do not operate on athletes but can expedite referral to a surgeon when
surgery is required.

Education:
Doctors who are interested
in specialize in sports medicine must first obtain a 4-year premedical degree. They
must then pass the Medical College Admissions Test to be admitted into a 4-year
medical school. After graduating, sports medicine doctors should serve a 2-year
residency in family or emergency medicine before moving on to sports medicine fellowship.
